Axon Internship

May 2023 - August 2023

Abstract

Axon is a leading public safety technology company specializing in non-lethal law enforcement equipment and public safety operations. As a hardware engineering intern at Axon, I contributed to the development and integration of TASER 10, Axon Body Cameras, and New Product Integration, focusing on iterative design changes, test fixtures, and optimizing performance. I worked mainly on the cartridge team on TASER 10 and integrated patent-pending design changes for the product.

Primary

  • Integrated patent-pending design changes for TASER 10.
  • Worked on test fixtures that eliminated single-use cartridge testing.
  • Contributed to iterative design changes for haptic feedback and feel for Axon products.

Secondary

  • Utilized a suite of measurement tools for data collection.
  • Created design system requiements and documentation for testing procedures
  • Worked on technical drawings and documentation for small batch prototypes and supply chain orders.

Project Features

Internship Overview

As one of Axon's inaugural mechanical engineering interns, I worked in rotation on different products at varying stages of development. I worked on the flagship TASER 10 line, Axon Body Cams, and new product development integration. Throughout my internship, I was able to experience the full engineering design process from design reviews to rapid prototyping to sustaining cost-down models of existing products.

I can't show much but here are some skills I utilized at Axon:

- Worked with healthcare professionals to analyze probe designs and their effect on neuromuscular incapacitation.

- Integrated patent-pending design changes on the TASER 10 magazine to increase handle life expectancy by 133%

- Created multiple components with DFM and DFA in mind, spending time at manufacturing sites to understand efficient assembly of components.

- Designed high-volume plastic injection molded parts and metal stamping parts in Creo for TASER 10.

- Worked with various materials and adhesives to create more effective seals for better water and dust ingress protection.

- Aided in haptic feedback designs for Axon’s bodycams and handles, improving tactile button and trigger feel.

- Developed design system requirements for spring stress test fixtures to eliminate single-use cartridge testing.

- Utilized a suite of measurement tools to determine magazine changes reduced loading force by 65%.

- Conducted tolerance analysis and FEA on critical design changes for TASER 10 and Axon Body Cameras.

- Worked closely with supply chain operations to keep timelines in check and order part samples for prototypes and cost-down sustaining projects.

- Created python scripts for data analysis for Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM) and large data excel sheets.
