XPRIZE Drone Attachment

January 2023 - April 2023

Abstract

As part of the XPRIZE Rainforest competition, I contributed to a team that designed mechanical attachments for a drone. My role focused on creating the attachment mechanism that secured an adhesive trap to the drone, enabling the collection of insects for analyzing metrics such as bug density, species diversity, and the presence of invasive species.

Goals

  • Design an attachment mechanism to the drone.
  • Create a lightweight, modular adhesive device.
  • Experiment with different adhesives that retain its properties in high speed winds.

Targets

  • Maintain a budget of $150.
  • Weight less than 1 lb.
  • Be within 3 inches of the drones circumference.
